Having established this anything-goes version of Batman’s world, the second season focuses on his greatest nemesis: the Joker. Though there have been a thousand stories about the origin of Batman, Telltale’s emphasis on how choices dictate allies and enemies made this version particularly compelling. The first season of Telltale’s Batman did an admirable job creating a version of Gotham unlike any other, with Bruce Wayne carefully managing his relationships with confidantes and would-be friends when he wasn’t punching out thugs in alleyways. Had I ruined their view of me by lying? Worse, had I ruined it by telling the truth? Telltale is no stranger to mixing up the “will remember this” formula for an extra emotional or funny punch, but “your relationship has changed” just shows how much the writers are thinking about how to guide the player’s feelings. I appreciated that, because every time “Your relationship with has changed” appeared on the screen I second guessed every choice in the preceding conversation. At the end of the episode, alongside the usual summary of how your major choices aligned with the rest of Telltale’s playing audience, the game also gives you a rundown of the dominant emotion that you left major characters with, whether it was loyalty, vengeance or another nuanced option. About Batman’s relationshipsĪll the big choices in Enemy Within are about Batman’s relationships with his allies, a move that feels designed to hurt me, personally, as someone whose favorite Batman series ever was the one about his relationships with his allies. Telltale even allows you to carry saves between different devices, and you can even create a new save by taking some of the most important decisions in a recap of the first game. As such, it’s not mandatory to have played the first game to enjoy this one, although it is highly recommended. This is a new story, not directly linked to the first game, but there are many references, and several choices carry over into the sequel. Telltale is once again given creative freedom to play with several characters, but in an interesting way and without completely disregarding their respective legacies in the comic book.
